How to keep mind focussed towards studies

Six easy steps to Increase Concentration and keep mind Focussed

1. Find a "Strong Reason"
2. Set a "Realistic Goal"
3. Make a  "Plan" to "Goal"
4. Make Plan or schedule effective
5. Work Out the Plan
6. Convert Study Into a "Fun Activity"

1. Strong Reason

To keep your mind "focussed" towards studies and to increase the "concentration power", The first thing one need to do, is to "Find A Strong Reason ", a very strong reason indeed for studying and working hard.

The "Strong Reason" can be anything like:

  • To make your report card more impressive and meritorious.
  • To perform outstandingly well.
  • To make your parents feel happy and proud of you.
  • To fulfill your own satisfaction and expectation level.
  • Or , it can be a combination or all of the above
But, "The Reason"  you choose  must be "strong"  enough to outweigh all your excuses, hurdles and obstructions which keeps you away from your books and studies. All your worries and hurdles must look very negligible and insignificant in front of "The Strong Reason".

2. Setting of Goal

Once you have found a Strong reason, the next step is to Set a "GOAL".The Goal must be:

  • Motivating and Challenging - setting a goal which can be easily achieved, can never make you motivated and focussed towards it.  For example, setting a goal of studying 1 hour daily is a easy challenge,so its human tendency to neglect small targets.
  • Realistic And Practical- Goal you set must be achievable and should be practically feasible. for example,it shouldn't be like , studying continuously for 15 hours without any break.
  • The realistic Goal should be like to finish a chapter or a topic of any one or two subjects daily, which is both achievable and practically feasible

3. Planning and making Schedule

After setting a Goal, next step is to Plan to achieve the Goal. The planning phase includes:
  • Make a schedule which can be followed and exercised regularly, it should be of more or less same pattern.
  • Fix your study hours, study time, plan for the subjects, which to be studied and when.
  • The purpose of making similar schedule is to develop a regular habit which helps in keeping your brain ready for the target you set  and ultimately the goal you set.

It is said that:

"If an activity is practised regularly for 21 consecutive days, then it automatically develops into a habit, and habit once developed need not to be practiced,it gets incorporated into you for a long time or may be for lifetime"

4. How to make a Schedule effective?
  • Set alarm, Try to wake up at a fixed time in morning  (6- 6:30 am). Keep in mind "NO SNOOZING "
  • Do meditation for minimum 30 minutes, it helps in improving memory and increses concentration power.
  • Make sure you follow the time table accordingly.
  • After following the days plan. Before going to sleep, try to recall the things you learnt throughout the whole day for 30 minutes.
  • Give yourself 10 minutes more to plan for the next day.
  • You must set a target for each day.
"There should not be any single moment in your life, in which you don't have any specific and set Target"

5. How to work out the plan?

  • Break down the goal into small units. For example, if the Goal is to finish a chapter in 2 hours, and chapter consists of 15 pages. Then, divide the chapter into 3 parts of 5 page each.
  • Set a smaller goal of finishing 5 pages in first half and hour, then 5 mins break, again next 5 pages in half n hour.
  • In this way, you can finish the reading the chapter in 1.5 hours, then what to do in remaining 30 minutes.
  • The last 30 minutes are most crucial, it must be utilized to its optimum level to "revise and recite" whatever you have studied.
  • If the revision part is skipped, then all the hard work done for 1.5 hours, gets fully wasted. You can only be able to recall the things partially.
  • This is the Critical area where most of the students misses out and this actually creates a barrier between a topper, an average and a below average student

6. Make your study into a Fun Activity

It is a well known fact that students can spend 4-5 hours in playing games and still keep themselves motivated and charged up for next level.

While its exactly opposite when it comes to doing studies, mind and body starts feeling tired and exhaustive just after 30-40 minutes.

Why this happens?Have you ever thought of the reason?

The reason behind this, is simple i.e. "INTEREST". Its the "interest" in the game or sports and the " increasing level of challenge",which keeps you motivated to play it for longer duration.

If the same thing can be done with your studies, then it will surely enhance your interest as well as your focus.

How to do it?
  • Convert each Chapter Into a "Mission".
  • Convert each Topic in chapter into a "Level"
    • For example: You have to finish 2 chapters in a day, then mark them as "Mission 1" and "Mission 2"
    • suppose the first chapter contain 10 topics, name it into Level 1, Level 2, and so on.
    • as you finish level 1, mark a cross sign against it on separate sheet
    • repeat this for all 10 levels.
    • put a realistic time limit to each level.
  • keep in mind, do not take a break without finishing the level once started
  • Break between each level should be between 5-8 minutes

Initially, it will be a difficult to follow these things, but as you start practicing it with all your will power keeping the goal in mind, things will start fall in place.
